“Art gives nothing up by being shared, and a collection shown to an audience gives them what it first gave you”.

STEVEN ALDERTON

Making Your Collection Accessible To All

Art is one of the few things that loses nothing by being shared and gains almost everything, and a collection put in front of an audience gives them what it first gave you. The private collections we still know by name, Barnes, Frick, Clark, Menil, Guggenheim, are the ones that were opened to the public, and that is what turned a group of purchases into an institution. Touring does the same work without giving anything up: the works go out for a season and come home with a catalogue, a conservation record, a place in the scholarship and tens of thousands of people who have now seen them.

FROM YOU TO THE WORLD

A collection held in one place is seen by the people who are invited to it. On tour it opens in Paris, Basel and Berlin, in New York and Los Angeles, Singapore and Shanghai, is seen by everyone and read by the curators who will write about those works for the next 30 years. Steven takes collections held by art centres, private museums, foundations, private collectors, family offices and public institutions, shapes them into an exhibition with something to say, and places it into museums across North America, Europe and Asia. It is the most generous thing a collection can do, and the most valuable: art making a difference and seen by all.

WHAT AN INTERNATIONAL TOUR GIVES A COLLECTION

Your works enter the international public record. They acquire an exhibition history, a published catalogue and a list of institutional venues attached to their provenance, which is the record museums, lenders and curators read when they assess a collection anywhere in the world. The artists you have backed are seen by museum audiences on three continents under your name. A foundation or family office gains a program with measurable reach, attendance and international press, and a body of scholarship, conservation and cataloguing work that stays with the collection long after the tour closes. For a public institution, it carries holdings from storage into museums in cities where the collection has never been shown, and brings back the reciprocal relationships that make future loans possible.

HOW WE WORK

Steven develops the exhibition from your collection, secures the international venues, negotiates the hire fees and the contracts, and delivers a show that installs in a national museum in one city and adapts to a smaller kunsthalle in the next without losing its argument. He assembles the curators, designers, producers, registrars and researchers the project needs, handles indemnity, immunity from seizure, customs and cross-border freight, and gives each host museum a package it can open on schedule and market with confidence.

How We Develop Travelling Exhibitions

Our program of activity includes all aspects of touring, including:

  • Exhibition development and design, with concepts built to flex across venues of different scale, ceiling height and security rating.

  • Content and narrative development, researched and written so the works carry the argument at every venue, in every language the tour requires.

  • Interpretive planning and research, including learning, access and community engagement frameworks each museum can run locally.

  • Multimedia and interactive design, from tactile elements to digital and immersive storytelling.

  • Concept design and visualisation, delivered as visuals, sketches, 3D renders and floor layouts you can use to secure venues, partners and funders.

  • Script, label and catalogue writing, with translation and cultural adaptation for each territory.

  • Schematic and technical design, with drawings, floorplans, crate and hanging specifications, condition reporting and courier requirements.

  • Branding and graphic design, a visual identity and a design system that carries across the tour and its marketing in every market.

  • Project and partnership management, covering venue negotiation in North America, Europe and Asia, tour scheduling, hire agreements, indemnity and insurance, government indemnity schemes, customs, carnets and international freight.

  • Audience research and evaluation, with attendance and audience data reported back to you venue by venue.

  • Marketing, ticketing and revenue strategy, including hire fee models, sponsorship, co-publishing and merchandise, so the tour returns something to the collection behind it.
